About "On The Move"
I created "On The Move" in 1987 while working for MSC or the Monterey Sculpture Center. A Bronze Foundry in Monterey County. It took two years to complete, and before I was happy with it enough to mold it. The first time "On The Move" was displayed in a Carmel Art Gallery a passing Art foundry was so amazed by my Bronze Octopus they accused me of some how molding a real Octopus! then casting it in Bronze. This was a great compliment, and also very funny. The edition is of nine, and there is only one left in the edition. Three Artist proofs will be made at a higher price. But only two are still available . The origional was sculpted hollow from wax.
Quote from: Wildlife Art page 65 May/June issue 2001. Magazine's statement:
"Lest you think Bronze is a medium that's too heavy for such a buoyant subject as fish & marine-life,check out Kirk McGuire's delicate castings. Just add water and they might swim away."
" I have always been facinated with Octopus. Especially the Pacific Giant Octopus. Some believe Octopus are one of the most intelligent animals in the Ocean, I believe they are. They are sensitive and intelligent, and are as fluid as the Ocean they live in."
" I sculpted "On The Move" to make bronze become fluid, defy gravity, and also to bring awareness to this amazing species."
"I hope through my Sculpture to bring an awareness of the Land, and Sea around us, and the Animals that live here.
And to show that we must respect, and cherish all Life, Wildlife, and our home Mother Earth."
Kirk McGuire
